When The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake struck the Kansai area of Western Japan in 1995, many foreign residents were left in a state of confusion because of a lack of emergen-cy information in any langauage other than Japanese. As a result, licenses for new radio stations broadcasting in foreign languages, particularly in the event of emergencies, were allotted in both Osaka and Tokyo, and InterFM started broadcasting in Tokyo in April 1996.
The Real Music Station
With 'The Real Music Station,' for a catchphrase, InterFM plays a wide variety of music, primarily international repertoire, selected both by individual DJs and by a selection team within the programming department We broadcast live from early morning until late in the evening. In an era when radio is becoming more and more tightly formatted, InterFM has managed to retain a liberal stance in its programming.
InterFM broadcasts primarily in Japanese, with English as the most commonly used foreign language. Public Service Announcements to serve the international community are aired in English, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Spanish and Portuguese. There are also English news broadcasts throughout the day.
Many of our DJs are bilingual, and most are music experts in their respective fields. We pride ourselves in having the most varied playlists on Japanese radio, with specialist pro-grams covering a variety of genres in the evenings and on weekends. We also feature pro-grams by a number of international personalities and DJs, such as Bob Dylan, Speech, Ja-mie Cullum, Gilles Peterson and Nick Luscombe. InterFM has long been the official broadcaster for the Grammy Awards and the Fuji Rock Festival.
The station's frequencies are 89.7 MHz in Tokyo. InterFM can also be heard throughout Japan via simulcasts on radiko.jp (paid service outside the Kanto region), and through the Lismo Wave service operated by mo-bile phone carrier au.
