Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
21st January 2026
This week’s edition is on the Yokohama Museum of Art Reopening Inaugural Exhibition, “Art between Japan and Korea since 1945”.
Japan and Korea, neighbors bound by geographical proximity and cultural affinity, have shared a long history. K-culture, including TV dramas, films, and music, has taken the world by storm, making South Korean culture seem increasingly familiar.
This exhibition was realised through a joint project with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and coincides with the 60th anniversary of the normalisation of diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea in 1965. It seeks to rediscover the countries’ relationship and the way they perceive each other through the art of both nations, which have cultivated a rich history.
The exhibition traces the exchanges between Japanese and Korean artists since the normalisation of diplomatic relations, featuring works by Zainichi (residing in Japan) Koreans from the period between 1945 and 1965, when Japan and Korea had no diplomatic ties. There is also an introduction to the globally renowned video artist Nam June Paik.
The exhibition brings together approximately 160 works by over 50 artists. In addition to pieces from the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, visitors will also be able to see works being shown in Japan for the first time, as well as new works created specifically for this exhibition.
Additionally, the museum shop is selling original products from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, as well as ceramic works, books, and other items. The cafe is currently offering strawberry sweets inspired by the exhibition concept. Please enjoy them alongside the exhibition.
The exhibition will be on until 22nd March. For enquiries, call 045-221-0300.
