This week’s edition is on an exhibition opening at the Yokohama Museum of Art on 25th April. It’s called ‘A Retrospective Commemorating the 110th Anniversary of the Artist’s Death: Imamura Shiko - A Revolutionary Innovator of Nihonga’.

The painter Imamura Shiko was active from the 19th to the early 20th century. This exhibition is the first large-scale retrospective of his work in 42 years.

Having studied traditional Yamato-e, a Japanese painting style that dates back to the Heian period, and demonstrated exceptional skill in historical painting from a young age, Shiko eventually set out to innovate Nihonga (modern Japanese-style painting). Inspired by the free and fluid style of early Edo-period painters such as Tawaraya Sōtatsu, and further influenced by late Edo-period landscape painting inspired by the Jiangnan region of China, as well as new expressions such as Western Impressionism, he brought a powerful individuality to his landscape paintings. His characteristic bold brushwork and composition and vivid colours are exemplified in works such as “Scenes from the Tropics” and “Eight Views of Omi Province”, both National Important Cultural Properties.

This exhibition traces the dynamic, creative path of Imamura Shiko over the course of his 35 years in a four-chapter structure. It features approximately 180 carefully selected works, including many on public display for the first time.

To coincide with the exhibition, a pop-up shop will be selling merchandise such as soft toy charms of animals that appear in Shiko’s works. As well as this, the café will be serving a parfait inspired by Shiko’s artistic style. A range of other events to enjoy alongside the exhibition will also be held, so please check the museum’s official website and social media accounts.

The exhibition will be on until 28th June. Advance tickets are currently on sale.

Some exhibits will be changed during the exhibition period. For enquiries, call 045-221-0300.
