This week's edition is on how to dispose of garbage and recyclables.

Please sort your garbage and recyclables by type, and place them at the collection point by 8am on the designated day. Do not put waste out after collection has taken place or at night. Also, to prevent waste from being scattered, please ensure that it is placed inside a net or net box.

Sorting your garbage correctly is important. If it is not separated correctly or if it is put out on the wrong day, it will not be collected. Please check the stickers at the collection point for information on garbage separation and collection days.

Particular care must be taken with combustible waste. Items such as batteries, aerosol cans, metal, and glass must not be included in combustible waste.

In recent years, there has been a spate of fires in garbage trucks and sorting facilities caused by lithium-ion batteries, such as those found in portable chargers.

Never, ever put these items in combustible waste. Proper sorting leads to safe and secure collection and the effective use of resources.

Yokohama City provides foreign language versions of a leaflet with rules for the ‘separation and disposal of garbage and recyclables’. It is available in 10 languages; English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Thai, French, Filipino and Nepalese.

The leaflets are distributed at each ward office, the Resources & Waste Recycling Bureau Office, and the Yokohama Association for International Communications and Exchanges (YOKE).

They are also posted on the Yokohama City website so please make use of them. Search “Yokohama Garbage” to take a look.
