Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
10th June 2026
This week's edition is on the 'Hakkeijima Hydrangea Festival, which opened in Kanazawa Ward’s Hakkeijima on 6th June.
Surrounded by the sea, Hakkeijima is a place where you can enjoy flowers of every season, and during the rainy season, 20,000 hydrangeas - the most in the prefecture - are at their best!
Among these, is the “Hakkei Blue”, an original hydrangea. Its name was chosen through a public competition in 2013 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hakkeijima’s opening. Be sure to look out for the “Hakkei Blue”, with its light blue petals that evoke the scenery of Hakkeijima, and its pretty double-petalled flowers.
At the '26th Hakkeijima Hydrangea Festival', which will be held until Sunday 28th June, visitors will be able to participate in events such as a stamp rally and workshops.
The ‘Hydrangea Hakkeijima Tour’ involves collecting stamps at eight locations along the paths of Hakkeijima. Participants who collect five stamps will receive a lovely reward, so be sure to get yours!
Entry to Hakkeijima is free. It’s an easy place to enjoy…you can admire the hydrangeas while taking a stroll, or stop for a break at one of the island's restaurants or cafés.
Hakkeijima’s hydrangeas can only be enjoyed now, in early summer, so don’t miss this opportunity to visit!
