Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
26th November 2025
This week’s edition is on Yokohama History Museum’s ‘Hōjō Genan Exhibition’
Yokohama History Museum is holding a special exhibition focusing on Hōjō Genan, a figure closely associated with Kozukue Castle, a medieval fortress that was located in Yokohama's Kohoku Ward.
The exhibition opened on 22nd November.
Hōjō Genan was born around the beginning of the 16th century as the youngest son of Hōjō Sōun, founder of the Sengoku Daimyo Hōjō clan. It is therefore considered likely that Genan was also deeply involved in the establishment of Kozukue Castle and its domain.
This exhibition traces the life of Hōjō Genan while introducing the Sengoku period in the Kanto region, based on the results of excavations at Kozukue Castle conducted by Yokohama City in fiscal 2021 and 2022, as well as written documents relating to Genan and the other lords of Kozukue Castle.
On 13th and 14th December, a program called “Hojo Genan and Sengoku Castles” will be held. This will feature lectures by castle survey specialists from various regions explaining their latest findings, along with a discussion on the future prospects for research on Kozukue Castle.
Additionally, there will be three lectures related to the Hojo clan during the exhibition period, as well as five talks given by the curator in charge explaining the highlights of the exhibition. All of the events will be held in Japanese. Please check the website etc. for details of each event.
The nearest station is Center Kita Station on the municipal subway line. It is a 5 minute walk from Exit 1 to the museum.
