The start of collection of small rechargeable batteries (lithium-ion batteries etc.)

PSA Yokohama
2025/12/03

Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

3rd December 2025

This week’s edition is on the start of collection of small rechargeable batteries (such as lithium-ion batteries).

Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries etc, such as those in portable chargers , have been occurring nationwide during garbage and recyclables collection. To ensure safer collection, the city has introduced separate collection for lithium-ion batteries and similar items.

Collection started on 1st December, on the same days as the twice-weekly ‘burnable waste’ collection.

Previously, only dry cell batteries were collected. Now, lithium-ion batteries and button batteries have been added to this and are being collected under a new category called ‘Batteries’.

Items that can be disposed of include dry cell batteries, coin batteries, button batteries, and rechargeable batteries such as portable chargers and electric bicycle batteries.

Please use up as much of each battery as possible, insulate them with tape, and put them out in one bag.

Small electrical appliances with non-removable batteries, such as handheld fans and portable game consoles, should be put out for collection on the same day, in a separate bag from ‘burnable waste’ and ‘batteries’.

Please note that swollen or damaged batteries, and portable power stations do not qualify. Do not place these at collection points, but instead take them directly to your ward’s Resources & Waste Recycling Bureau Office.

Car and motorcycle batteries are not eligible for collection. Please consult the retailer or manufacturer.

Metal items where the longest side is 30cm or more, and non-metal items where the longest side is 50cm or more, are classified as "oversized garbage." Please apply at the Oversized Garbage Reception Center.

The city asks for your kind cooperation in ensuring safe collection and recycling.
