Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

14th September 2022

This week’s edition is on Yokohama Port Museum.

Yokohama Port Museum and Sail Training Ship NIPPON MARU can be found in Nippon Maru Memorial Park, located in Yokohama’s Minato Mirai 21 district.

Sail Training Ship NIPPON MARU is a National Important Cultural Property.

Built 92 years ago this year, she is a ship with a long history.

After her retirement as a training ship, she was brought to Yokohama and has been open to the public since 1985.

Yokohama Port Museum has undergone a renewal and opened afresh in June 2022!

Its theme is “Port of Yokohama in history and life”, and the remodel saw the installation of interactive elements such as a gantry crane simulator and a VR theatre.

The large screen’s "Arrival of the Black Ships" animation transports visitors back to the arrival of Perry's fleet.

What kind of development has there been since the opening of Yokohama Port?

Through photos and videos, you can learn about the port town of Yokohama as it evolved with the construction of wharfs and container terminals.

In the VR theatre, surrounded by five screens - above, below, left, right, and in front of you - you can experience powerful images such as those of Sail Training Ship NIPPON MARU spreading its sails, and the Minato Mirai 21 district, which used to be a shipyard in the past, transforming into the city it is now.

Inside Yokohama Port Museum, there is also an art museum featuring works by Ryohei Yanagihara.

Ryohei Yanagihara was in charge of advertising design for Suntory.

He later moved to Yamate in Yokohama, where he continued to draw pictures of ships - his passion.

A wide variety of works, including paper cutouts, oil paintings, and lithographs are on display.
